Build Better Criminal Databases with a JAG Grant

Ensemble GroupBlog

Welcome to another edition of the GangScope blog!  Recently, we were on a client meeting and referenced grants for funding. While the prospect had no idea, a lightbulb went off that this must be the next post!

As someone who works with agencies daily, we know one thing is certain: information is power! The right data at the right time can close a case, prevent a crime, or protect an officer.  However, many agencies, especially at the local level, face budget limitations that make it difficult to deploy or upgrade criminal justice databases.  This is where the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) truly becomes a valuable resource.

The Edward Byrne JAG program is a federal funded grant held every year through the Department of Justice.  It is designed to help state and local law enforcement agencies strengthen their capabilities, and one of the key ways you can use this money is to build, upgrade, or integrate your information systems.  While there has been some turmoil regarding government funding recently, we have seen these grants become reactivated daily with 1-2 month timelines for submission so please be constantly checking your state issuing agency for updates.

If your department receives direct JAG funding already, or if your state administers JAG sub awards to local agencies, here are some steps you can use to invest in a database:

  1. Identify the need to clearly define what the agency is looking for
  2. Build the case on how it will support key law enforcement goals
  3. Engage with vendors early to help scope the project and provide technical details (we are here when you are ready haha)
  4. Submit your application with your grants team
  5. Implement and train to ensure a smooth deployment

As your department is planning to upgrade expand its database capabilities, the Edward Byrne JAG grant is one of the best tools available to help fund that project.  In that same regard, GangScope would be the best tool to help implement that project! We are a 28CFR Part 23 compliant database ensuring federal regulations are followed.  We integrate with local and state systems to provide real-time access to records while streamlining reporting and compliance processes.  The overall outcome is enhanced crime analysis and investigative capabilities at your fingertips.

To learn more about JAG resources in your state, please visit the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) to determine what department within your state would allocate JAG grants.  You can also sign up for a website like GrantFinder.com to be able to search for all types of relevant law enforcement grants.  Here you can easily search “JAG” to see when your state is accepting applications or open the search to see all grants that you may be eligible for.

We wish you safe days and may all of your projects be fully funded in 2026!!!
