As artificial intelligence continues to gain attention across the public safety sector, one question remains at the forefront: what AI capabilities would actually help investigators and analysts perform their jobs more effectively? To better understand these needs, we spoke directly with law enforcement professionals and intelligence personnel about the future of investigative software. Rather than focusing on futuristic concepts, respondents identified practical applications that could help agencies process information more efficiently, uncover hidden connections, and make better-informed decisions.

One of the most requested capabilities was the ability to interact with investigative systems using natural language. Instead of manually building searches or navigating multiple screens, users envisioned simply asking questions such as, “Show me every event that occurred on a particular street during the past 30 days,” and receiving immediate results. This type of conversational interface could significantly reduce the time required to locate relevant information and allow investigators to focus more on analysis and less on data retrieval. Many agencies also expressed interest in AI-powered analytical assistants that can summarize findings, identify key records, and help users quickly navigate large volumes of data.

Respondents also highlighted the value of AI for identifying trends, patterns, and relationships that may not be immediately visible through traditional investigative methods. Investigators described scenarios where AI could assist in linking related incidents, highlighting similarities among unsolved cases, and identifying potential associations between individuals, organizations, or threat groups. By continuously analyzing data, AI has the potential to uncover investigative leads that might otherwise remain hidden within large datasets.

In correctional and detention environments, participants saw opportunities for AI to support operational decision-making through trend analysis and risk assessment. Examples included identifying activity patterns within specific housing units, providing intelligence to support inmate placement decisions, and helping staff better understand emerging security concerns. Agencies also expressed interest in tools capable of assessing historical activity while recognizing that final decisions should always remain under the supervision of trained personnel.

Additional areas of interest included AI-assisted image enhancement, facial comparison technologies, and the ability to interpret coded language, slang, or symbols commonly encountered during investigations. As criminal organizations continue to evolve their communication methods, agencies see value in tools that can help analysts interpret information more quickly and accurately.
