Every good investigator knows when it’s your turn to go to court, you need to take time to prepare, review reports and documents associated with your case, and even practice your testimony. Let’s dig into more of what you can do to equip yourself for a good experience in court. Whether you are a seasoned veteran, or you are testifying on your very first case, gearing up for court is a necessity.

• Appearance: You want to start by having a professional, clean, and pressed appearance. Fair or not, first impressions are real and this is going to help you appear more credible, as well as show that you respect the Court.
• Preparation: Review all police reports, supplements, interview notes, witness statements and evidence before court.
• Familiarize yourself with the legal process: A prosecutor is not always going to be available or willing to explain the process or go over courtroom procedure with you, so be sure to brief yourself and become familiar with rules of evidence and the elements of the law that is involved in your case.
• Practice and refine your testimony: Review details, makes sure you have accurate dates, coordinate your testimony with prosecutors if possible.
• Remain calm: Expect challenges and questions about your testimony and have your responses ready. Don’t let badgering or criticism about your character rattle you.
