Motorcycle Gangs: A thing of the past?

Ensemble GroupBlog

Motorcycle gangs, often referred to as outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMGs) or outlaw motorcycle clubs (OMCs) are still very present in numerous states in the U.S. These groups are typically characterized by their use of motorcycles, distinctive emblems, tattoos, or “colors” they wear, and by a culture that often includes criminal activities. While it is important to note that not all motorcycle clubs engage in illegal behavior, some OMGs have been involved in organized crime, drug trafficking, firearms, extortion, human trafficking, and violence. It is important to note that not all motorcycle clubs involve themselves in this kind of activity, and many clubs or groups simply share a passion for motorcycle riding and camaraderie.Top of Form

The three most notorious OMGs are:

  • Hells Angels: The Hells Angels Motorcycle Club is one of the most well-known and oldest outlaw motorcycle clubs worldwide. It originated in California. Some members have been associated with drug trafficking, assault, extortion, and other violent crimes.
  • Bandidos Motorcycle Club:  The Bandidos have been around since the 1960’s and originated in Texas. They have been involved in various criminal activities, including drug trafficking, firearms trafficking, and violent confrontations with rival gangs.
  • Outlaws Motorcycle Club: The Outlaws MC also has a history as one of the oldest motorcycle clubs in the United States and was started in Illinois, but now has chapters throughout the U.S. as well as in several countries. It has been linked to organized crime, including drug trafficking and violent conflicts with other gangs.

The presence of motorcycle gangs may not be as common as back in the 1980’s or 1990’s, but in many areas of the U.S., they continue to operate and give law enforcement agencies reasons to observe or investigate them. Recently in New Jersey, the Pagans biker gang almost doubled in size in the last few years and several members were arrested for violent crimes such as assaults on other bikers, and drive by shootings. In April of 2023, two separate highway shootings in Texas took the lives of three members of an outlaw motorcycle gang which was discovered to be a retaliation for another hit in Oklahoma City. In February of 2024, numerous arrests were made at a Hells Angels clubhouse in Stockton, CA. At least four people were arrested, and 50 firearms were seized

Without a doubt, there is still ongoing serious criminal activity happening by many outlaw motorcycle gangs.
